The relationship we have with Pravasis is beyond that. \u00a0It\u2019s a bond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>How Mahatma Gandhi affected\/took part in the SA\u2019s history<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Opposition to Apartheid<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">The return of an Afrikaner-led National Party government by the overwhelmingly white electorate in 1948 signalled the advent of the policy of\u00a0<a title=\"History of South Africa in the Apartheid Era\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sphss108.co.za\/index.php?subid=381&amp;option=com_acymailing&amp;ctrl=url&amp;urlid=5&amp;mailid=59\" target=\"_blank\">Apartheid<\/a>. During the 1950s, non-whites were removed from <a title=\"Electoral roll\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sphss108.co.za\/index.php?subid=381&amp;option=com_acymailing&amp;ctrl=url&amp;urlid=6&amp;mailid=59\" target=\"_blank\">electoral rolls<\/a>, residence and mobility laws were tightened and political activities restricted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">The successful increase of awareness outside of South Africa achieved in the Indians&#8217; movement under the leadership of Gandhi inspired blacks in South Africa to resist the racism and inequality that they, and all other non-whites, were experiencing. The two racial groups began working together, forcing themselves to accept one another and bash their own personal prejudices against one another. This required effort: education supporting the other race and their achievements, and constantly reminding themselves that they needed one another to combat the oppression they were facing. They began collaborating, even jointly campaigning for their struggle to be managed by the United Nations (although in this time, western society was not practicing equality for all people either).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">The ANC also found its role model in the initial movement by the Indian political parties. They realized that they would need a fervent leader, like Gandhi was for the Indians, who was, in the words of Nelson Mandela, &#8220;willing to violate the law and if necessary go to prison for their beliefs as Gandhi had&#8221;. In 1949 the ANC saw a jump in their membership, which previously lingered around five-thousand, and began to establish a firm presence in South African national society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">In June 1952, the ANC joined with other anti-Apartheid organizations in a <a title=\"Defiance Campaign\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sphss108.co.za\/index.php?subid=381&amp;option=com_acymailing&amp;ctrl=url&amp;urlid=7&amp;mailid=59\" target=\"_blank\">Defiance Campaign<\/a> against the restriction of political, labour and residential rights, during which protesters deliberately violated oppressive laws, following the example of <a title=\"Mahatma Gandhi\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sphss108.co.za\/index.php?subid=381&amp;option=com_acymailing&amp;ctrl=url&amp;urlid=8&amp;mailid=59\" target=\"_blank\">Mahatma Gandhi<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<a title=\"Gandhi's work in South Africa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sphss108.co.za\/index.php?subid=381&amp;option=com_acymailing&amp;ctrl=url&amp;urlid=9&amp;mailid=59\" target=\"_blank\">passive resistance<\/a> in <a title=\"KwaZulu\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sphss108.co.za\/index.php?subid=381&amp;option=com_acymailing&amp;ctrl=url&amp;urlid=10&amp;mailid=59\" target=\"_blank\">KwaZulu<\/a>&#8211;<a title=\"Natal Province\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sphss108.co.za\/index.php?subid=381&amp;option=com_acymailing&amp;ctrl=url&amp;urlid=11&amp;mailid=59\" target=\"_blank\">Natal<\/a> and <a title=\"Champaran and Kheda Satyagraha\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sphss108.co.za\/index.php?subid=381&amp;option=com_acymailing&amp;ctrl=url&amp;urlid=12&amp;mailid=59\" target=\"_blank\">in India<\/a>. The campaign was called off in April 1953 after new laws prohibiting protest meetings were passed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Violent political resistance<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">Following the <a title=\"Sharpeville massacre\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sphss108.co.za\/index.php?subid=381&amp;option=com_acymailing&amp;ctrl=url&amp;urlid=13&amp;mailid=59\" target=\"_blank\">Sharpeville massacre<\/a> in 1960, the ANC leadership concluded that the methods of non-violence such as those utilized by\u00a0<a title=\"Mahatma Gandhi\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sphss108.co.za\/index.php?subid=381&amp;option=com_acymailing&amp;ctrl=url&amp;urlid=8&amp;mailid=59\" target=\"_blank\">Gandhi<\/a> against the <a title=\"British Empire\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sphss108.co.za\/index.php?subid=381&amp;option=com_acymailing&amp;ctrl=url&amp;urlid=14&amp;mailid=59\" target=\"_blank\">British Empire<\/a> during their colonization of <a title=\"India\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sphss108.co.za\/index.php?subid=381&amp;option=com_acymailing&amp;ctrl=url&amp;urlid=15&amp;mailid=59\" target=\"_blank\">India<\/a> were not suitable against the Apartheid system. A military wing was formed in 1961, called <a title=\"Umkhonto we Sizwe\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sphss108.co.za\/index.php?subid=381&amp;option=com_acymailing&amp;ctrl=url&amp;urlid=16&amp;mailid=59\" target=\"_blank\">Umkhonto we Sizwe<\/a> (MK), meaning &#8220;Spear of the Nation&#8221;, with Mandela as its first leader. MK operations during the 1960&#8217;s primarily involved targeting and <a title=\"Sabotage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sphss108.co.za\/index.php?subid=381&amp;option=com_acymailing&amp;ctrl=url&amp;urlid=17&amp;mailid=59\" target=\"_blank\">sabotaging<\/a> government facilities.
